This book was prompted by a paradox: the tension between the individual and the collective, between the transcendent and the immanent. Jonas Mekas has probably been the artist to best represent the triumphs of the underground cinema made in the USA from the 1950s onwards. However, we should avoid personalisms, since the spirit of his times exceeds his individual merit. No aceptaremos las ataduras rather deals with what Mekas shares with authors such as Thoreau and Whitman namely, a need to free oneself from bonds that are extremely heavy. Nevertheless, theses resistances emerge in a territory where most often no testimony remains, and yet this testimony has survived to this day.
