Sergi Álvarez Riosalido (Sabadell, 1992) is a writer, curator and researcher. He currently lives and works in Barcelona.
His work moves between writing, research and curatorial practice, often emerging at the intersection of artistic practice and fields such as psychoanalysis, image studies, literature and gender studies. He is particularly interested in the relationships between language and affect, the ways in which we construct and exceed meaning, and the contradictions that shape our relationship with images and bodies.
He holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, with a specialisation in cinema, a Master’s degree in Comparative Studies in Art, Literature and Thought from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and a postgraduate degree in Contemporary Thought from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He later completed the Master’s programme in contemporary art curating L’art contemporain et son exposition at Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) as a ”la Caixa” Foundation fellow.
He is the author of No aceptaremos las ataduras. Jonas Mekas y la tradición norteamericana de Thoreau y Whitman (Brumaria, 2017) and has published essays, criticism and texts on art and visual culture in journals including El Ciervo, A*Desk, Exit Express, Comparative Cinema and Found Footage Magazine, as well as contributing to publications and exhibition catalogues. His writing has addressed authors and artists including Harun Farocki, Jonas Mekas, Jean Painlevé, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Nan Goldin, exploring questions of the body, intimacy, desire, memory and the politics of the image.
As a curator, he has developed exhibitions, public programmes and research projects at institutions and spaces including La Casa Encendida, Matadero Madrid, CCCB, CA2M, HANGAR, Casal Solleric and Palau Robert. His projects include Un amor salvaje que arruina nuestra paz (La Casa Encendida, 2019), Hay cartas que detienen un instante más la noche (La Casa Encendida, 2020), De tarde en tarde, hay cosas que sólo pueden decirse por carta (Matadero Madrid and CCCB, 2022), Una casa sense foc és com un cos sense sang (Can Felipa, 2023), and Swiftly arose and spread around me (Hangar, CA2M, 2024–2025). He has worked with the Centre Pompidou and Jeu de Paume in Paris and is currently curator and Head of Artistic Programming at Dilalica, as well as a lecturer at BAU, Centre Universitari d’Arts i Disseny, in Barcelona.
